
Fiberglass is the better material. Vinyl is the better buy for most houses. Fiberglass windows cost 40 to 70 percent more, and the extra performance mostly shows up in edge cases: dark colors, very large openings, extreme temperature swings, and homes you plan to keep for thirty years.
Both materials are dramatically better than the aluminum frames a lot of people are replacing, which is the comparison that actually matters for comfort.

The expansion issue, which is the real difference
This is the technical point that explains most of the others.
Vinyl expands and contracts substantially with temperature. Fiberglass is made from glass fibers, so it expands at close to the same rate as the glass pane it is holding. That matters because a frame and a glass unit expanding at different rates puts stress on the seal between them, cycle after cycle, year after year.
In moderate conditions, quality vinyl handles this fine — the frames are engineered with the movement in mind. Where it starts to matter:
- Very large units, where the absolute amount of movement is greater
- Extreme daily temperature swings
- Dark frame colors in strong sun, where surface temperatures climb far higher than white
That last one is the practical takeaway. If you want black or bronze frames on a west-facing wall in the South Bay and Greater Long Beach, fiberglass is worth the money. White vinyl in the same opening will be fine for decades.
The number both of them have to hit in California
The frame material argument is worth having, but neither material gets to ignore the code, and the code cares about the assembly rather than the frame.
Title 24 Part 6 is California's own energy code, not an IECC edition, and the 2025 version took effect on 1 January 2026 across all sixteen climate zones. The prescriptive numbers are U-factor 0.30 and SHGC 0.23, but Section 150.2(b)1B gives replacements of 75 square feet or less of vertical glass an easier target: U-factor 0.40, and SHGC 0.35 in zones 2, 4 and 6 through 15. Leave the NFRC labels on for the inspector.
Both materials can be built to clear that bar and both can be built to miss it. Compare labels, not categories.
What vinyl actually does well
Price. The gap is not trivial. On fifteen windows, choosing vinyl frees up $4,500 to $9,000.
Insulation. Multi-chambered vinyl frames are genuinely good insulators. On the NFRC label, a well-made vinyl window and a well-made fiberglass window in the same size land close enough that the difference is not what decides your comfort.
No maintenance. The color goes all the way through. It never needs painting, and it never will.
Availability. Every manufacturer makes it, every installer works with it, and replacement parts exist.
What fiberglass actually does well
Narrower sightlines. Because the material is stronger, the frame can be slimmer for the same structural performance. More glass, less frame, in the same rough opening. On a big picture window that difference is visible.
Paint. You can change the color in fifteen years when you repaint the house. Vinyl locks you into today's decision permanently.
Large openings. Big sliding doors and oversized units benefit from the added stiffness.
Longevity. 30 to 50 years is a real claim. Whether it matters depends on whether you will be there.
The thing both salespeople will skip
The glass package matters more than the frame material.
A vinyl window with a good double-silver low-E coating, argon fill, and a warm-edge spacer will make a room more comfortable than a fiberglass window with a basic coating. The frame is the perimeter; the glass is the entire middle of the opening.
Our opinion: buy the best glass package you can afford in a quality vinyl frame, rather than a mid-tier glass package in fiberglass. The exception is dark colors in hot sun, where fiberglass is not an upgrade but a requirement.
Second thing both will skip: installation outranks both materials. A superb window installed without proper sill flashing, without shimming square, without air sealing the perimeter, will leak air and eventually water. We have replaced eight-year-old premium windows that failed because nobody flashed the sill. The frame material was not the problem.
Where composite and clad wood sit
Two other options worth knowing so you can rule them out or in:
Composite frames — usually a blend of wood fiber and polymer — sit between vinyl and fiberglass on price and performance. Sturdier than vinyl, paintable in some product lines, and typically less expensive than fiberglass. A reasonable middle option.
Aluminum-clad wood is the premium choice for a home where interior wood is part of the point. Wood inside, aluminum outside, $1,000 to $2,500 per window installed, and the wood needs eventual attention on any elevation that gets weather.
Plain aluminum frames, no thermal break: skip them in any climate with real heat or real cold. They conduct heat straight through the wall and sweat in winter.
Picking without overthinking it
Go vinyl if you want white or light frames, your openings are standard sizes, you might move within fifteen years, or you would rather put the money into the glass package or the attic.
Go fiberglass if you want dark exterior frames, you have oversized units or big sliders, you are staying long-term, or the narrower sightlines genuinely matter to how the house looks.
Go clad wood if you want real wood on the inside and you are prepared for the maintenance and the price.

The NFRC numbers for your specific units, not the brochure's best-case figures. Which low-E coating. Whether the spacer is a warm-edge type. Insert or full-frame installation. How the sill is flashed. And a written warranty that separates frame, glass unit, hardware, and labor, because those are usually four different terms.
